Joseph Inguimberty (France, 1896-1971) painting, circa 1936.
He was admitted to the Fine Art School of his native town, and in 1914 he entered the National School of Decorative Arts. He travelled to Belgium, The Netherlands, Spain and Italy thanks to the Blumenthal scholarship which he received in 1921, the French State scholarship in 1922, and finally to the National Prize of 1924 awarded to his work The Stevedores of Marseille which gave him the opportunity to make a trip to ancient Greece. He ardently desired to go and live and paint in a faraway country. Hence in 1925, he accepted to be a professor at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Hanoi until the closure of the school in 1945. Together with Victor Tardieu (French, 1870-1937), they rendered great services to the development of Vietnamese painting.
