La Coupole, Montparnasse, Paris, between the two wars. It was in the cafés of Montparnasse – which replaced Montmartre at the beginning of the century – that the world history of art was written in those years. What triumphed there, to an ever greater extent than spirit, was culture. A culture created by an extreme artistic cauldron fuelled in equal parts by meetings and interactions between artists, gallery owners, collectors and various institutions.
