(9 \u00bd x 13 in.)<br \/>\n(9)\n\t<p>This series of nine watercolors is absolutely unique in Vietnamese painting: they can be dated around 1930-1935 when the painter who graduated from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vietnam_University_of_Fine_Arts\">Fine-art School of Hanoi<\/a>\u00a0in 1931 and became successful the same year during the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paris_Colonial_Exposition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Colonial exhibition in Paris (s'ouvre dans un nouvel onglet)\">Colonial exhibition in Paris<\/a>, continued his work painting in a very typical Hanoian style.<\/p>\n<p>He was known for his photorealistic technique of painting. When he entered the Fine Art School in 1926, he kept enriching his techniques using watercolours instead of lacquer or gouache on silk to pursue his work and faithfully captured the old Hanoi atmosphere, specifically the northern district of Hoan Kiem.<\/p>\n<p>One can notice the odd jobs of old Hanoi &#8211; a seller of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pho\">Pho<\/a>, a fortune teller with coins, transporters, wood carvers, traders selling different utensils in the colorful world near the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Long_Bi%C3%AAn_Bridge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Long Bien bridge (s'ouvre dans un nouvel onglet)\">Long Bien bridge<\/a>\u00a0or the Dong Xuan market.<\/p>\n<p>Thang Tran Phenh, although a graduate of Beaux-Arts d&#8217;Hanoi and one whose work was exhibited at the 1931 Exposition Coloniale in Paris, will only go down in history as a sympathetic illustrator. He lacked the stamina of a\u00a0Le Pho, the depth of a\u00a0Nguyen Phan Chanh, and the technique of a\u00a0Nguyen Gia Tri.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Let us rather consider him as an honest observer of his time.
