This masterpiece from the Rothschild family collection is offered with the estimate EUR 8,000,000 &#8211; 12,000,000 in Ma\u00eetres Anciens: Peintures &#8211; Sculptures on 12 June 2024 at Christie&#8217;s Paris<\/p>\n<p>Le melon entam\u00e9 is one of the artist&#8217;s most important works, and it remains in private hands. For\u00a0<strong>Pierre Etienne, Christie&#8217;s International Director of Old Master paintings,<\/strong>\u00a0&#8220;Le melon entam\u00e9 is an instance of pure pictorial poetry, a moment suspended in time that encapsulates all of Chardin&#8217;s magic: the balance of composition, light, colour, and shape.&#8221;\u00a0The painting was first exhibited at the annual Salon held by the\u00a0Acad\u00e9mie de Peintures et de Sculptures\u00a0in 1761, alongside its pendant,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ago.ca\/collection\/object\/61\/36\">Le bocal d&#8217;abricots<\/a>, (now in the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto) and the famous\u00a0Panier de Fraises,\u00a0acquired in February 2024 by the Louvre.<\/p>\n<p>These three treasures were noted by the artist\u00a0<strong>Gabriel de Saint-Aubin\u00a0<\/strong>during the Salon, who sketched them in the margins of his copy of the exhibition catalogue.<\/p>\n<p>The oval, almost circular format of\u00a0Le melon entam\u00e9\u00a0highlights the intimate nature of the scene as experienced by the viewer. Rare in the artist&#8217;s \u0153uvre, this form was chosen by Chardin for a specific reason; it becomes, as is the case in this painting, an extension of the composition.
