Honoured to have contributed the accompanying essay on Nguyen Cao Thuong for ANNEXE Auctioneer. We are delighted that all three works by the artist achieved a 100% sell-through rate, a testament to the continued recognition of his place within the history of modern Vietnamese art. I wrote that Revolutionaries is not merely a political image, but “a grave and powerful meditation on history, sacrifice, and belief.” Painted in 1985, the work restores history to the multitude: farmers in conical hats, wounded bodies, grieving mothers, banners and flags carried forward by ordinary men and women. Its deepest subject is not victory, but the dignity of those who bear history upon their shoulders.
