Works by Vietnamese artists Le Pho, Mai Trung Thu, Vu Cao Dam, Luong Xuan Nhi, and Nguyen Nam Son on display and auction sale at Christie’s Hong Kong, 29 November 2023; these works previously on view at Christie's Singapore, 29 October 2023

Christie's 20th Century Art Day sale brings together a selection of works by celebrated artists that encapsulates the alchemical exchange across the East and the West in the history of modern art. The sale is led by a rediscovered still-life painting by Sanyu from the 1930s, featuring the iconic chrysanthemum motif of the artist. Works by fellow Asian masters, such as Wu Guanzhong, Zao Wou-Ki, Chu Teh-Chun and Kazuo Shiraga will converse with those of Western artists such as Henri Matisse, Marc Chagall, Francois-Xavier Lalanne and Etel Adnan. In addition, this sale will also offer an exciting lineup of paintings by Korean modern art pioneers including Lee Ufan, Park Seo-bo and Kim Tschang-yeul.

The sale also features paintings and works on paper by prominent artists from Southeast Asia. A group of lively paintings by Filipino artist Fernando Cueto Amorsolo will be presented alongside iconic works by Indonesian artists, including Affandi, Lee Man Fong, Hendra Gunawan, Haji Widayat, and Singaporean artists Liu Kang, Chen Chong Swee, Cheong Soo Pieng and Chen Wen Hsi. Remarkable paintings on silk and canvas by Vietnamese masters, including Nguyen Nam Son, Mai Trung Thu, Le Pho and Vu Cao Dam, are not to be missed. Further highlights include a group of modern Burmese paintings from a private Asian collection, notably the ones by U Ngwe Gaing and U San Win. This eclectic ensemble brings forth a remarkable opportunity to acquire exceptional artwork for any distinguished collector’s taste.
