It has been a privilege and an honour to co-curate Echoes of Tonkin at DE SARTHE, Hong Kong, and to lead the curatorial tour on the exhibition’s opening day.
At its heart, Echoes of Tonkin is an exploration of artistic encounters, cultural exchanges and the many ways in which Vietnam has been observed, interpreted and remembered. Rather than presenting a single narrative of modern art, the exhibition brings together distinct artistic visions, shaped by different histories, sensibilities and experiences.
After months of research, reflection and dialogue, it was particularly meaningful to share these histories in the presence of the works themselves, where the complexities of history find expression through the language of art.
My deepest gratitude to Pascal de Sarthe for his vision, trust and generosity; to Jean-François Hubert for his exceptional scholarship, insight and guidance; and to my fellow curator Leah Do for a rewarding intellectual collaboration.
My sincere thanks also go to the entire De Sarthe Gallery team for their dedication, to the collectors for entrusting us with these remarkable works, and to everyone who joined us for the opening.
It has been a remarkable journey, both intellectually and personally, and one I will always cherish.
